This year, interspersed with new shows, the Free School University Program will be replaying most of the shows from last year, roughly in chronological order. (The only shows we’ll skip will be those for which there is no recording, and maybe a few that were so topical that they are no longer of great interest.) Most of these shows are also available on our Archive and Podcast pages.
This week, we’ll rebroadcast Peace and Economic Justice with activist Mike Prokosch, which originally broadcast on 4/18/2012.
Longtime peace and justice activist Mike Prokosch is one of the main organizers behind the 25% Coalition, which seeks to build support for cutting the U.S. military budget by 25%, and investing those funds instead in building and sustaining our communities. With the U.S. facing devastating economic and environmental crises, with our states and cities forced into layoffs and cutbacks, now is the moment to demand a shift in our country’s priorities. Military spending — now more than $700 billion per year — is bankrupting our country and draining the life blood of our communities. Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank, in calling for a 25% reduction in military spending, put the issue clearly: “If we are not able to get military spending under control… we will not be able to respond to important domestic needs.” With a 25% reduction in military spending, we could instead fund urgent needs, including jobs, housing, health care, education, clean energy and infrastructure repairs, and prevent the layoffs of State and local public workers in the Commonwealth.
