4/10 Occupy Economics with Prof. Gerald Friedman (rebroadcast)

This year, interspersed with new shows, the Free School University Program will be replaying most of the shows from last year, in chronological order.  (The only shows we’ll skip will be those for which there is no recording, and maybe a few that were so topical that they are no longer of great interest.)  Most of these shows are also available on our Archive and Podcast pages.

We’ll start, tonight, with Occupy Economics, which originally broadcast on 1/18/2012.

Topics for discussion include “What’s wrong with economics?”, why past and present economic theories such as “methodological individualism” and institutionalism just don’t cut it, and what an economics for the 99% might look like.

Jerry Friedman is a professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He received his BA in Economics from Columbia in History and Economics in 1977 and after working for a year at the ILGWU he went on to earn his PhD from Harvard in Economics in 1986. Since then he has been teaching at the University of Massachusetts where he teaches the mega-lecture introduction to microeconomics to 420 students at 8 in the morning. He is the author of several books on the labor history of the United States and Europe, most recently of Reigniting the Labor Movement: Restoring Means to Ends in a Democratic Labor Movement, and has consulted with unions and groups advocating for single-payer health care.

Wed 4/3/13 The Crisis of Student Debt

with Jackie Sewell of Young Democratic Socialists

Four years ago, debt, in the form of unsustainable mortgage lending, crashed the entire global economy. Crises of debt are looming in at least four other economic sectors, also: credit card debt, as people struggle to stay afloat in a “jobless recovery”; health care debt, caused by rising health care costs and a predatory private insurance system, and student debt. College costs are rising rapidly, and state and federal government support for higher education has been slashed, resulting in been a generation of college graduates staggering under a crippling burden of debt.

Young Democratic Socialists (YDS), the youth section of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has campus chapters of activists on colleges all over the country. Not surprisingly, they have made student debt one of their priority issues.

Jackie Sewell is National Youth Organizer for YDS. She will share with us what this vibrant organization of college-age socialists has learned about student debt, and about how to fight back.

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner can carry about 250 passengers. This blog was viewed about 1,400 times in 2012. If it were a Dreamliner, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.

Wed 12/26 Faith, Belief & Values

A conversation between an atheist & a person of faith

This week’s show is a conversation between Free School University host David Knuttunen (an atheist) and Theology in Action host David Concepcion (a person of faith).   In the conversation, we explore some questions about faith, belief and related values – morality, justice –  and try to come to a better understanding of each other’s point of view.

The conversation was recorded on Friday, December 21st as a “twofer” – or a joint episode of Free School University and Theology in Action, and first aired on Theology in Action Friday, December 21st at 6:00 pm.

Theology in Action’s blog is at http://theologyinaction.wordpress.com/.

Some of David Knuttunen’s ideas discussed on this show have been discussed on his blog Persistent Wondering, particularly in the following posts:

12/19 Motherhood and Poverty in America (Rebroadcast)

Guest: U. Mass Boston Professor Randy Albelda

Guests we had on during the early days of this show got shortchanged on airtime, because we had not yet established regular rebroadcasts, show archives or podcasts. This is too bad, because some of them were really wonderful shows. So we’re trying to remedy that with some rebroadcasts and belated podcasts.

Equal Opportunity

This week’s rebroadcast first aired around Mother’s Day, and featured feminist, activist and economics professor Randy Albelda sharing her deep understanding of the way poverty is not only feminized but, to coin a word, motherized in our society.  She helps us understand why it is so difficult for single mothers to avoid poverty.  She talks about what programs work (even if they have always been too stingy to really work well), and which ones don’t, and why. Most important for activists, she tells us what we should demand of our government if we really want to end poverty.

Randy Albelda is co-author (with Chris Tilly) of Glass Ceilings and Bottomless Pits: Women’s Work, Women’s Poverty, and author of numerous articles on women and poverty in Dollars and Sense magazine and elsewhere.
